Mechanical Peeling vs. Chemical Exfoliation

With an exfoliant, also peeling, it is important to distinguish between two to distinguish methods. There are mechanical and chemical peels (exfoliants). The main difference lies in the way, how dead skin cells are removed :

  • A mechanical peel (scrub) works with small particles or rough surfaces that you gently rub over your skin. Dead cells are "sanded off" in the process.
  • A chemical peel , on the other hand, uses special active ingredients such as acids or enzymes. These break down the connections between the dead skin cells, allowing them to detach. Rubbing or scrubbing is not necessary here - you simply apply the exfoliant and let it work.

You feel mechanical peels immediately, while chemical treatments tend to work subtly .Both methods can renew your skin and restore its natural glow . Which is better for you depends on your skin type and your needs.

Different chemicalexfoliants

There are different types of chemical exfoliants, each tailored to different skin needs:

AHA peels (alpha-hydroxy acids):

Water-soluble AHA acids come from natural sources such as fruit, milk, or sugar cane. These glycolic, lactic, or fruit acid treatments break the bonds between dead skin cells and the skin surface. They are ideal for normal to dry, sun-damaged skin.

  • Promotion of cell renewal
  • Improvement of moisture retention
  • Reduction of hyperpigmentation and acne scars
  • Increase in collagen production
  • Visible reduction of signs of skin aging
  • Improvement of active ingredient absorption

BHA peels (beta-hydroxy acids):

Oil-soluble BHA acid (e.g. Salicylic acid) penetrates deep into the pores and is ideal for normal to oily skin that is prone to impurities or acne. BHA exfoliants remove dead skin cells, effectively reduce clogged pores and have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Regulation of sebum production
  • Removal of deposits and excess oil
  • Prevention of impurities
  • Reduction of redness and irritation
  • Matte, even finish

PHA Peels (Polyhydroxy acid):

PHA-acid (e.g. Lactobionic acid or Gluconolactone) has the largest molecular size of the three exfoliants. This means it does not penetrate the skin as deeply as AHA and BHA. This makes PHA a particularly gentle peel. It promotes cell renewal and provides the skin with moisture. These properties help to prevent wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and other signs of aging and improve skin appearance.

  • Gentle removal of dead skin cells
  • Unveiling a smooth, radiant complexion
  • Strengthening the skin barrier
  • Improving skin texture
  • Acting as an antioxidant, protection from environmental influences
